In 2000, George Denney, Ruby McDermott, and a few others were discussing what
were then Exits 19 and 20 (now Exits 20 and 22), the main entrances to the Freeport Village.
They did not look well cared for and did not provide an appealing welcome into the town. It was thought that cleaning, clearing, some judicious pruning, and attractive plantings at these exits would greatly enhance the first impression of the town.
This lead to meetings with Freeport Town Manager Dale Olmstead, who was in agreement with the group’s appraisal and enthusiastic about the proposed improvements. With Mr. Olmstead’s help and support, meetings were arranged with the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT), within whose jurisdiction these areas fell.
Plans were drawn, approvals obtained, volunteers gathered and funds raised. Cleanup work was done and, under the direction of Ruby McDermott, very attractive planting beds soon blossomed at both entrances to the village.
The project was a great success. The idea of applying the same approach within other areas of the village followed. The Freeport Community Improvement Association was born.
The Freeport Community Improvement Association is a recognized and fully functional non-profit organization who’s Mission Statement is “To enhance the environment and quality of life for all Freeport citizens and visitors through the beautification of our village and its pathways.”
We have assembled a dedicated and enthusiastic Board of Directors and many talented volunteers from within the community as well as from local businesses and property owners.
We have completed several significant projects, have several ongoing projects, and have a number of exciting new projects in development. (Visit our Projects Section for details.) The results of the FCIA’s work can be seen in ways both subtle and dramatic on any walk through the village.
We work with a number of other Freeport organizations to integrate our mission with theirs. (See our Affiliations Section.)
We’re happy to say the future of FCIA is… well…blooming! (Even though that’s a really bad pun)
So, that’s a little about us. Now how about you? The FCIA is a great way to make a lasting and visible difference in your community! Check out our Volunteer Section to see some of the opportunities there are to help.
